The Volvo XC60 Recharge is an excellent plug-in hybrid SUV. The moniker will be used on all future plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and full-electric models - any Volvo you can plug in and charge, basically. Essentially, it sounds like the same vague, easily dodged (or forgotten) promises that every other car company is making, all the way up to Ferrari. Jonathan Crouch drives it. With the throttle pinned on the open road, the Volvo’s power delivery was often intoxicating. The Volvo’s semi-autonomous driving systems, including hands-on steering assist in select conditions, are solid, though still behind the hands-off standards of Tesla's Autopilot and Cadillac’s SuperCruise. (That maize-like caliper color also showed up on the seatbelts.) Volvo's new luxury sedan is smart, good looking, and predictable. The new Volvo S60 T8 Twin Engine and T8 Engineered by Polestar plug-in hybrids seem to pack what it takes to fight in the electrified sport sedan class, on paper. The teasing continues with satisfyingly firm steering, oodles of tire grip, and an eager attitude in curves, despite the additional 440-pound, 10 kilowatt-hour battery that runs along the Volvo’s center spine. You wouldn’t even notice this is a PHEV by looking in the boot: unlike some plug-ins, the XC40 has the same boot capacity as the regular version. Its full name is a long one: 2021 Volvo XC90 Recharge Plug‐In Hybrid. Unlike Tesla, General Motors, BMW, Nissan, Ford, Toyota or Volkswagen, Volvo has yet to put a single electric car in showrooms, or to build a hybrid of any note. A plug-in hybrid is similar in principal to a Toyota Prius hybrid, but with a bigger set of batteries that can be recharged from the mains, thus extending the electriconly running. My recent misfortune was to test the Volvo S60 that, on paper, might seem the pick of the litter: The plug-in hybrid T8 Twin Engine that brings a combined 400 gas and electric horsepower, or 415 horsepower for the rare “T8 Polestar Engineered” model that I drove. 2020 Volvo XC60 T8 Polestar review: Excellent but exorbitant. Add an 87-hp boost to the rear axle from a pair of synchronous electric motors, and you’ve reached that combined gas-electric peak of 415 horsepower, or 15 less for the T8 Twin Engine. Whether buying or leasing, I’d recommend putting your money on any other S60: The T8 is one of those overpriced, neither-nor “performance” hybrids—think the old Lexus LS 600h—that don’t save fuel in any compelling way. The Volvo XC90 Recharge T8 is a fantastic plug-in hybrid SUV and was arguably the first car to successfully nail the brief in the large premium off-roader class. It’s also the first Volvo to use the new Recharge branding unveiled at the launch of the full-electric version of the small SUV last year. City operation became a wearying chore. A bigger issue is that—as in the hybrid XC90—the Volvo’s claimed fuel-efficiency numbers seem like something from Fantasyland, and not in a good way. When you’re operating in all-electric mode, which happens all too rarely, this S60 is exclusively rear-driven. There are some interesting alternatives to the XC60, though. The tuning of the by-wire brake pedal is the obvious culprit, with a fatal lack of predictable, linear transitions from the regenerative stoppers connected to mechanical friction brakes. The 2020 GLC Hybrid is the successor to the 2019 model and sports an updated fascia along with updated powertrain to give out better performance. In the standard Hybrid mode, the transition from electric to petrol motor is seamless and the refinement of the three-cylinder unit can make it hard to tell when it has cut in. Doing my best Auntie Prius impression—coasting like mad, never topping 60 mph—I did manage to eke out 32 highway mpg on one run, still 2 mpg below the claimed figure. Volvo's S60 Recharge T8 plug-in hybrid is a really quick mid-sized premium badged saloon, but this fast four-door isn't just about performance. The EPA hasn’t certified Volvo's self-reported numbers yet, but Volvo is figuring 27 mpg city, 34 mpg highway, and 30 mpg combined. Work that out. But the moment the XC40 accelerates from standstill on a soothing push of electric power, there’s no doubt that a hybrid powertrain propels the car. And whenever I stepped off the pedal to resume forward progress, the brakes groaned. If real estate is all about location, the Volvos are all about design, design, design. © document.write(new Date().getFullYear()) Brookline Media Inc. All Rights Reserved. That S60 T6 AWD starts from $41,295; if you want to go cheaper, prices start at $36,795 for the T5 with front-wheel-drive and a 250-hp turbo four. It’s a shame, too, because the S60 had its usual good things going for it: The front Contour seats (optional on most S60 models) are some of most beautiful, most cosseting around, wrapping front passengers in a firm-yet-comfy embrace. Review Volvo XC40 plug-in hybrid SUV (2020 - ) review. Technology, performance and design delivered to your inbox. Setting off, in particular, seemed to be a struggle for the columnist. Worse, my T8 displayed the flat-out-worst brakes I’ve experienced in a hybrid car in some time, making it all but impossible to make smooth or precise stops. Add the Polestar’s flinty ride, and the experience wasn’t at all luxurious. Volvo's S60 Recharge T8 offers a quicker, cooler option amongst premium mid-sized plug-hybrid saloons. The first diesel-electric plug-in hybrid to go on sale, in fact. Volvo claims the Twin Engine will surge to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds, or 4.3 seconds for the Polestar, only about 0.2-0.3 seconds behind the M340i or AMG C43. Millions of Americans—and seemingly hundreds of journalists—were taken in by Volvo’s cynical proclamation that it would become an “all-electric” manufacturer in the near future. For us, the answer would be fou… Jonathan Crouch drives it. But this isn’t an AWD car in the conventional sense: There’s no driveline connection between the front and rear wheels. Listen, Volvo isn’t the first automaker to find it more profitable to talk about electrified cars than to actually build them. But after driving the S60 T8, I’ve got one reaction: Volvo, if this is the kind of "electric" car you have in mind, then it's time to stop talking and get back to the drawing board. Among the exclusively-four-cylinder powertrains, the T6 model with standard all-wheel-drive should be your bull's-eye, with 316 horsepower from a 2.0-liter engine with the dual threats of a turbocharger and supercharger. They are a stepping stone to full electric and they work now, whereas full electric requires a lot of compromises at present. Economics comes into it, too: the £40,905 price of the R Design model we drove compares with £36,585 for the most powerful 244bhp petrol variant in similar R Design spec (but offering all-wheel drive). Ten Second Review. Because this is a plug-in hybrid, the S60 T8 also qualifies for $5,000 tax credit. There seems to be a lot of anti-PHEV comment around which is strange because these cars can actually be very efficient. Volvo's S60 Recharge T8 plug-in hybrid is a really quick mid-sized premium badged saloon, but this fast four-door isn't just about performance. A diesel-electric plug-in hybrid. I know this because everyone from my neighbors to my family to random people in the street ask me about it whenever Volvo's name comes up, all in a tizzy over Volvo's progressive ideals. So, is it the ultimate all-rounder? Maybe someone could enlighten me if I'm wrong?? Or would the XC60 T8 parrot the stoicism of the XC90 T8? Skoda Superb Estate iV Review 18 Mar 2020 The Skoda Superb Estate iV is a petrol-electric plug-in hybrid with lots of space; it offers good value for money and it’s decent to drive Read more review. So let’s step back and consider who's really leading the electric race, here in 2019. Volvo Car Australia has now added a panoramic sunroof and Harman Kardon audio system to the XC40 Recharge Plug-In Hybrid's standard specification. I know there is an argument that some people have these as company cars but never plug them in, but even then, they spew out a lot less pollution around town where they rarely run their engines, charging and saving the battery when doing faster miles, so there is still a genuine environmental advantage. Volvo must have known how its weasel-worded press release would be received by a half-gullible, half-complicit media that’s desperate for clickbait on electric vehicles: The layperson's takeaway was that Volvo would soon stop building fossil-fueled cars entirely and sell nothing but EVs. Keep the battery topped up and make the most of EV mode and you’ve got an ideal city cruiser that can also cope effortlessly with long cruising journeys. As ever with a plug-in, much will depend on what you’re buying it for, and how you intend to use it. All good so far, all fairly priced for this level of style, luxury and Volvo safety. Autocar doesn't seem to think this car is especially expensive at £41k & 250 hp. Volvo's S60 Recharge T8 offers a quicker, cooler option amongst premium mid-sized plug-hybrid saloons. (It has further pledged that 50 percent of its cars will be fully electric by 2025.). Before I beat the electric stuffing out of the plug-in hybrid version of Volvo’s new S60 sedan—as ineffective a hybrid as we’re likely to see in 2019—a disclaimer: I’ve greatly enjoyed every other S60 model that I’ve driven, along with its shapely cousin, the V60 wagon that I tested just weeks ago. Wagons may not sell like they used to—but that hasn't stopped Volvo from building a good one. Not that the latter's a bad thing. No automaker has done less to advance the cause of electrification, while taking more credit for supposed “leadership,” than Volvo. Are you as passionate about cars as we are? Even though Clarkson has driven a plug-in hybrid Volvo XC90 before, he couldn’t seem to fathom the petrol-electric system this time around. it's a shame that this is just over the £40k tax threshold, as it would put people off buying one privately. 2019 Volvo V60 First Drive: What American Families Would Drive in a Brighter Timeline. With our running limited to Volvo’s test track, we’ve yet to do enough mileage in the XC40 Recharge PHEV to offer a definitive verdict and so are withholding a star rating for now – but our first impression is that the new powertrain makes a strong package even more compelling. It uses a 1.5-litre petrol engine, a powerful electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack to provide up to 46 kilometres of emissions-free driving. 2021 Volvo XC40 T5 Recharge Plug-in Hybrid Review Published on : November 27, 2020 November 27, 2020 by Patrick Jackson Combining a surprisingly punchy and frugal engine with a perfectly usable amount of pure-electric driving range, the XC40 Plug-in Hybrid makes a very strong case for itself as a usable daily driver. Aside from the charging port near the front wheel arch, you’d be hard pressed to spot the difference between the plug-in XC40 and purely combustion-engined versions. The price tag is a little longer as well, with a before on-roads asking price of $114,990. When sold by the company they are bought by private buyers who, having paid a premium for them almost always plug them in. Ultimately, this S60 rarely felt like a 415-horsepower car. The tax you pay would then depend on how you drive it. You can unsubscribe at any time using the unsubscribe mechanism on any email you receive from us. They thought the Vauxhall was at £35k and 300 hp. But however or wherever I drove it, the Volvo's mileage was a rank disappointment, no better than many non-hybrid luxury sedans I’ve tested. Another benefit is the reduction in CO2 output – 41g/km, compared to 127g/km for the XC40 T3, powered purely by the three-cylinder 1.5 petrol engine, and a fuel economy of 141.2mpg (an NEDC correlated figure based on the WLTP test cycle). This arthritic creak didn’t happen just a few times. Ten Second Review. 2018 Volvo V90 Inscription Review: The Station Wagon Goes Supernova. We came away from our first drive in a 316-hp XC60 T6 quite impressed, and so we were curious to see how Volvo would put the T8 powertrain’s additional 84 electric ponies to use in the smaller of its two SPA-based crossovers. He wrote: “You get into the Volvo, turn the diamond-cut starter button and nothing happens. Add everything up and the XC90 T8's drivetrain is rated at 400 hp and 472 lb-ft, figures that compare favorably to the Volvo's major rival, the Lincoln Aviator Grand Touring plug-in hybrid. Both motors are driven through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. On the plus side, the my T8 Polestar looked fantastic with its “Black Stone” paint and blacked-out trim, the starkness of which highlighted the yellow-orange, six-piston Brembo brake calipers and 20-inch forged wheels. 2019 Volvo S60 First Drive: The Mid-Sized Luxury Sedan That Makes Being Anodyne a Positive. the plug-in hybrid version of Volvo’s new S60 sedan, the hands-off standards of Tesla's Autopilot and Cadillac’s SuperCruise, Volvo’s cynical proclamation that it would become an “all-electric” manufacturer in the near future, It has further pledged that 50 percent of its cars will be fully electric by 2025. A burst of beauty and grace, here at the end of days. A useful indicator on the rev counter shows where the car will switch power sources, making it easy to balance making rapid progress with extracting better fuel economy. But simply put, Volvo (mostly) nails it. The S60 and V60 are simply fine-looking cars, including interiors that come across like artfully staged studios in a Stockholm high-rise. High points include City Safety, which can automatically brake for not only cars, pedestrians and bicycles, but large animals such as deer, horses or moose. While Volvo’s other plug-in models, built on the SPA architecture, feature an electric motor that drives the rear wheels, the XC40 twins the three-cylinder 1.5-litre engine with a front-mounted electric motor, powering the front wheels only. The XC40 PHEV is due to reach the UK shortly, but we were given a short early introduction at Volvo’s Gothenburg base in Sweden. It’s a well-honed package, offering effortless electric-only running in Pure mode – one of four drive modes, which include an off-road setting, accessed via a button just below the touchscreen. The latest version of Volvo’s hugely popular XC40 both completes one chapter for the company – and starts a new one.. But the striking, tablet-style Sensus touchscreen remains one example of form over function: the screen's responses are fitful, and cumbersome menus require too much eyes-off-the-road time, especially for a safety-first brand like Volvo. The reason the boot is unaffected is because the whole powertrain is located under the bonnet. The S60’s limber, confident handling has been another pleasant surprise. The S60 and V60 have been a breath of fresh Scandinavian air in an often-formulaic luxury class. Volvo's XC60 is at its cleverest - and priciest - in Recharge T8 Plug-in hybrid form. Sophisticated Öhlins dampers and a front strut brace further suggest a hybrid ass-kicker that might take on a Tesla Model 3, or conventional sport sedans like Mercedes-AMG's C43 or BMW’s ferocious new M340i. … Used Volvo XC60 review In the XC60, though, the motor gets its power from a 10.4kWh battery rather than the XC90’s 9.2kWh unit, and this car can travel up to 28 miles on pure electric alone. Whoops: What Volvo actually meant was that every all-new model in its future lineup will be electrified, offering either a hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or EV version. It happened every time I stepped off the brake, whether the car was cold or warm, hundreds of times over a week of driving. I also loved the Volvo’s digital gauge cluster, including the hybrid’s nifty, dual-needle indicator that shows exactly how much power you can apply without triggering the gas engine. 1 May 2020. In many ways, this Scandinavian crossover is a delight, but the as-tested price seems a bit hard to justify. As for the Polestar Engineered version, Volvo is bringing just 23 copies to America for 2019, all pre-"sold" exclusively through its Care by Volvo subscription program at $1,100 per month. Therefore the company tax incentives ensure that there is a ready supply of vehicles that can do the school run and local journeys on electric only, but will also work for the family holiday. Versus BMW’s plug-in 3 Series and 5 Series sedans, forget it: The 330e isn’t as fast as the Volvo, with just 248 horses and a 5.3-second 0-60 mph run, but it's still plenty quick and delivers on its hybrid promise:.I saw as much as 39 highway mpg in the BMW, and 32 mpg combined, versus a respective 32 mpg highway and 25 mpg combined (on my best behavior) in the Volvo.
